MEREDITH GOT UP EARLY and ran four miles, her excess nervousness forcing her to release the energy or explode. When she came back, Haden was still asleep and the sight of him in the other bed undid all the good her run had just done.

She was dressed and eating breakfast in the dining room when he finally showed up. Sonia greeted him at the door with a smile and fresh fruit. She handed him the plate then turned and picked up a coffee pot from the sideboard. “Would you like some café, señor? I have bread coming out of the oven in five minutes.”

Meredith watched; Delgato’s smile was as warm as the coffee she was offering.

Haden responded with a grin of his own. “Thank you, Sonia, that would be great.”

The exchange grated on Meredith’s nerves and the fact that it did bothered her even more. She was acting like some kind of hormonal teenager, for God’s sake, one minute attracted to Haden, the next distrustful and cautious. She’d faked being asleep after he’d come out of the bathroom last night, but she’d felt his eyes on her in the dark. She’d wanted to ask him what he was thinking and why he was doing what he was doing. She’d wanted to sit beside him and talk for hours like they had before. But she couldn’t. And that made her mad as well.

When he came to the table and sat, she spoke brusquely. “Another of Sr. Gomez’s ‘cousins’ found me this morning while I was running.”

Haden tilted his head.

“She’s lucky to be alive.” Stabbing a slice of pine apple with her fork, Meredith recounted the episode. “She grabbed me just as I went around a corner and I reacted before I realized what was going on.”

“How many holes did you put in the poor girl?”

Meredith felt her mouth go tight. “She gave me an address,” she said. “I’m leaving in five minutes. I’ll be back by eleven. I assume you’ll be here?”

“I’m going with you.”

“No, you’re not.”

“I want to hear what’s said.”

“I’ll tell you when I return.”

They stared at each other from across the table, then after a second, Haden leaned closer. “What’s wrong with you this morning?”

“I keep my network confidential,” she said. “People won’t talk if I show up with an entourage.”

“I’m one person,” he said calmly. “And whoever he is, your man would talk to a stadium full of people, if you pay him enough. Don’t treat me like I don’t know what’s happening.”

“I don’t know this guy,” she argued. “If you show up, it could spook him—”

Haden took her chin in his fingers, his touch soft, his voice low. “What are you doing, Meredith? Are you trying to make me not trust you? If you are, it’s working.”

She felt relief that he’d misunderstood her emotions but it didn’t last long. “I’m trying to do this the right way.” She moved her chin away from his hand. “We need some information if we’re going to find Vega’s compound. Your girlfriend was a little lacking in the details.
